Lucky for us we live only two blocks from one of Seattle's premier children's hair salons, equipped with hand carved sea creature stools mady by a local artist. Now our girl has beautiful layers to show off those curly locks!
Hey Kristy :) I use Photoshop and Lightroom to edit photos. The effect you are talking about is called "vignetting". I swore I would never do it but now I like it. hahahha.

Hey Brigette - what photo editing software do you use? PhotoShop? I love the shaded edges you use but my Picasa doesn't appear to do that. KMW
